In general, five stages of hematoma evolution are recognized: hyperacute (<1day) intracellular oxyhemoglobin. isointense on T1 acute (1 to 3 days) intracellular deoxyhemoglobin. T2 signal intensity drops (T2 shortening) T1 remains intermediate-to-low early subacute (3 to 7 days) intracellular methemoglobin.

In case if a hematoma is suspected in the brain then the physician will refer the patient to a neurologist or neurosurgeon which will examine the patient and order studies like an MRI or a CT scan of the head to pinpoint the location of the Hematoma and then formulate a treatment plan.

A common complication of all hematomas is the risk of infection. Since there is no blood supply to a hematoma—it is a collection of old blood—there is a risk of bacteria colonizing the site. If the hematoma becomes large enough, it can compress tissues and prevent oxygen from reaching surrounding tissue.

Most hematomas resolve spontaneously over time as the blood debris is removed and the blood vessel wall is repaired by the body’s repair mechanisms. Other times, surgically removing or evacuating the blood in a hematoma becomes necessary based on its symptoms or location.

The prognosis for subdural hematomas is usually not clear at the initial time of treatment. The outlook can depend on how quickly treatment was given, where the head injury occurred, and how much the brain was damaged. Acute subdural hematomas – where a severe head injury causes immediate symptoms – have high injury and death rates.

However, if you have a large hematoma that is causing a lot of pain and inhibiting mobility you may have to get it drained by your doctor. To drain a hematoma your doctor will make a small incision to gain access and then insert a syringe to relieve the area of built-up blood, clots, and fluid.

Hematoma can form in any organ of the body; it can be as tiny as a pinhead, or as large as a tennis ball. The symptoms of hematoma may depend on its size, its location and whether it compresses the tissues, nerves, or other nearby organs. Pain, swelling, redness are common symptoms of a hematoma.

The hematoma may be caused by either rupture of the epigastric artery or by a muscular tear. Causes of this include anticoagulation, coughing, pregnancy, abdominal surgery and trauma.
