Bruise On Baby'S Head From Birth

Bruising in a newborn usually occurs in the face and head as a result of delivery. Babies born breech, or bottom first, may show bruising in the feet and genital area. Bruising on the head may be seen in the area around your newborn’s eyes, as well as on the forehead.

Abusive head trauma (AHT), or previously called "shaken baby syndrome" can be common in babies—it occurs when a child is forcefully shaken and/or experiences an impact to the head in a manner that is so violent that it ruptures blood vessels within the skull, causing intracranial hemorrhage.

It happens when fluid collects under your baby’s scalp and causes swelling and bruising. Caput often appears on top of a baby’s head and toward the back. It can make your baby’s head look stretched out or lopsided. The swelling and bruising should go away in a few days.

In addition to looking elongated, a newborn’s head may have a lump or two as a result of the trauma of delivery. Caput succedaneum is a circular swelling and bruising of the scalp usually seen on top of the head toward the back, which is the part of the scalp most often leading the way through the birth canal. This will fade over a few days.

A baby’s soft spot should appear flat on the baby’s head. A sunken soft spot may be a sign of dehydration, and a bulging soft spot may be a sign of meningitis or hydrocephalus, which is excess fluid built up in a baby’s brain.

A baby’s soft spots are the spaces between the skull bones that do not fuse and are instead covered by a tough membrane (1). The medical term for the soft spot is fontanelle or fontanel.

Excess fluids in the hands and feet cause them to swell up, a condition known as edema. The blood volume of pregnant women increases by 50%.

There is a substantial and well-founded research base on the significance of bruising in children. The younger the child, the greater the risk that bruising is non-accidental and the further potential risk. Mobile children: While accidental and innocent bruising is significantly more common in older mobile children, practitioners are reminded that mobile children who are abused may also present with bruising and suspicious injuries.

In the previously mentioned study by Sugar and colleagues, cruising children exhibited one to five bruises and walking children had one to eleven bruises (mean 2.4 bruises per injured child). [ 2] The majority of these bruises (93%) were found over bony prominences.

In cases where bruising is found, the clinician should obtain a complete medical history and document all findings from a thorough physical examination. Physicians are required by law to report situations that may indicate child abuse.
