Purple Bruise On Knee

Bruises are bluish or purple-coloured patches that appear on the skin when tiny blood vessels called capillaries break or burst underneath. The blood from the capillaries leaks into the soft tissue under your skin, causing the discolouration. Over time, this fades through shades of yellow or green – usually after around two weeks.

A small bump under the skin can be a blood clot ( hematoma) as you have rightly noted. If there is no functional loss or severe pain , there is nothing to worry about. You can apply cold compresses to stop it growing.

Bruising from physical abuse will eventually turn green, whereas these particular purple bruises stay purplish. The purple bruises that are common on a very elderly person’s arms will not cause any problems to that individual other than a cosmetic concern. However, they are the result of a problem.

Some of the causes of bruising for no reason include age, medication, or serious disease. Bruising for no reason may be a signal to consult a healthcare professional. As people age, capillary walls become less able to withstand the bumps and jostling of daily activities.

Thrombocytopenia: This is a clotting disorder, which leads to low platelet count. A low platelet count ups the chances of unexplained bruising on arm. Thrombocytopenia often occurs secondary to certain other condition such as an immune disorder, pregnancy or leukemia.

Most bruises are caused by some form of blunt force trauma to blood vessels under the skin. When these blood vessels break open, blood begins to pour into the surrounding tissue. This blood pools under the skin and initially looks dark purple or deep red.
