Strange Bruise

Unexplained bruising usually isn’t something to worry about. Bruises that are odd looking or in unusual places could be cause for concern. Bruises have a way of bothering us for days, either because they’re painful or we don’t know how they got there.

Unexplained bruises that occur easily or for no apparent reason may indicate a bleeding disorder, especially if the bruising is accompanied by frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums.

Bruising without an injury can be a sign of diseases of the kidney, liver and blood such as hemophilia, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, scurvy and thrombocytopenia.

Clotting problems can also be an acquired condition, as in the case of cirrhosis of the liver. Leukemia, von Willebrand disease, and other platelet disorders also make people more likely to have bruises for no reason, while bruising around the belly button may indicate pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas.

Bruising easily, or even spontaneously without trauma, could signify a medical problem that needs attention. Bruising easily could mean that bone marrow isn’t producing enough platelets, components of blood that literally plug leaks in the walls of injured blood vessels.

Random or unexplained bruising on legs can happen for a number of reasons. For example, being in the sun too long, aging, or a vitamin deficiency can weaken small blood vessels near the skin’s surface. This can result in bruising easily on your legs or other areas of your body.

With immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), the blood platelet level is low while other blood cell levels are normal in an otherwise healthy child. The reduced number of platelets frequently leads to easy bruising and possibly a tendency to bleed more easily and longer than normal.
